The Islamic Architecture Symposium 2026, themed “Barakah in Architectural Practices and Sustainability in Negara Brunei Darussalam,” is being held over four days (excluding Friday) from June 10 to 14, 2026, at the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Islamic Khazanah Hall (BKISHHB).
The symposium is organized by BKISHHB in strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Development and local public higher education institutions, namely Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), and Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB). It is held in conjunction with the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition 2026 (Brunei MYCE 2026).
The symposium was officially opened by Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin.
The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat, led by Awang Abdul Najib Syazwan bin Shahrani, Imam Level 1 of Pehin Khatib Abdullah Mosque, Kampung Kulapis.
In her welcoming remarks, the Acting Deputy Director of BKISHHB and co-chair of the Islamic Architecture Symposium 2026, Yang Mulia Hajah Nur Kamilah binti Haji Ismail, stated that organizing this event aligns with BKISHHB’s vision as an Islamic Knowledge Heritage Center. The institution plays a pivotal role in collecting, preserving, researching, and disseminating the treasures of Islamic knowledge through various academic activities.
She further explained that the symposium represents one of BKISHHB’s key efforts to strengthen a culture of knowledge. It serves as a premier platform bringing together professionals, academics, local technical officers, researchers, students, and stakeholders to exchange views, share experiences, and explore innovative approaches in the fields of Islamic architecture and sustainable development.
The event proceeded with a keynote presentation delivered by Dato Seri Paduka Ar. Awang Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin of Eco Bumi and Partners, who is also the Chairman of the Institution of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects (PUJA). His presentation was titled “Barakah—Guiding Architecture Beyond Form.”
Following the opening ceremony, Yang Berhormat toured the engaging and informative exhibitions showcasing various government agencies, higher education institutions, professional bodies, financial institutions, and diplomatic missions to Negara Brunei Darussalam (NBD).
Among the highlights was a demonstration exhibition held at the Special Gallery, featuring three traditional heritage arts from the Islamic Republic of Iran: Calligraphy, ‘Kashi-Moargh’ Mosaic Tile Art, and Qalamkari (textile printing) Art. These three live demonstrations were specially brought in by art experts from the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran to NBD.
In conjunction with the four-day Islamic Architecture Symposium 2026, various exhibitions have been organized at BKISHHB and are open to the public.
Visitors have the unique opportunity to observe and learn Islamic calligraphy techniques through a live demonstration by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Negara Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Taghi Rajabi.
This art form represents Persian calligraphy, which is highly renowned and celebrated as a masterpiece within Iran’s cultural heritage. Numerous other exhibitions and activities are also being featured throughout the duration of the event.
